Teaching Special Needs Not a “One Size Fits All” Approach

working with special needsEveryone has different ways of learning. Some people learn better through listening or visual cues, while others need a more hands-on approach to understand certain concepts. Students with special needs especially require a unique approach to learning, but even all special needs children cannot be grouped into the same category. Diagnosing a child as special needs does not necessarily mean that they will benefit from a particular style of learning, because “special needs” is really an umbrella term for a variety of different problems, including behavioral, developmental, learning and mental issues. Children with these disabilities can have a wide range of challenges when it comes to learning, and working with special needs in an academic setting can be difficult for both the student and teacher.

Children with special needs benefit from a program that accommodates their particular needs and moves at a pace that is comfortable for them. Such accommodations can be difficult in a public school setting, because teachers are often times managing a classroom of over 30 students. Many schools offer special education classes for students with special needs, but again, not all special needs children have the same learning disabilities. Children that are put in these classrooms may not be getting the best educational experience because their particular needs may not be met. Although teachers in these rooms are certified in working with special needs, they could have a classroom full of students who require different learning tactics.

Schools for children with special needs specialize in working with learning disabilities. They know that teaching special needs is not a one-size-fits-all approach and are able to cater to each child’s individual learning disabilities. Special needs schools are also better equipped for teaching students with disabilities. They have the resources available to ensure that each child is given the best learning experience possible.
