Best Spring Break Tips for Special Needs Kids

Spring Break Tips for Families with Special Needs Kids

It’s almost time for spring break, which for some families can mean warm weather, spending time in the sun, and most importantly, so much free time. However, for families with children on the autism spectrum, spring break means schedule changes, unexpected meltdowns, and academic backsliding. That’s why we have gathered a few helpful spring break tips to keep your child occupied and engaged.

Routines are Essential

For children and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), routines are critical for behavior and emotion management. Try to keep your child on the same schedule during break that they had during school. This means getting them up at the same time and eating meals or snacks when they normally would on a school day. This can be difficult with spring break schedules but keeping your child’s routine as close to a school day as possible can be very helpful for managing their overall day.

Stay on Top of Skills Like Math and Reading

Spring break is a great time to incorporate the tasks your child would do on a daily basis at school to help keep their skills sharp and routines consistent. Invite your child to read dinner recipes with you or let them count and match socks when you are folding the laundry. It is important during spring break to encourage your child to read and practice math to prevent academic backsliding. Get creative! There are so many items to count and things to read during your day that can make learning fun!

Make Time for Sensory-Friendly Outings and Activities

Sensory-friendly outings, like going to museums, aquariums, or theaters during quiet hours are fun ways to spark your child’s curiosity as well as spending some time outside of the house. Nature-walks or outdoor crafts are low stress environments for your child to relax and get in some sensory exploration time. These are also great ways to spend quality time with your child during break.
