At The Deron School, we always look forward to autumn: it both means the return of our students and a fresh school year but also the chance to get off campus and explore all that New Jersey has to offer this colorful, crisp season. Below, find five activities fun for the whole family to explore this fall!
1 Apple Picking Galore
’Tis the season to find your own apples, pumpkins, and gourds, and New Jersey is packed with amazing orchards to visit. Within a few miles, there are plenty of pickings to choose from: Conklin Farm U-Pick in Boonton, Bonacorsi Family Farm in Franklin Township, and Hillview Farms in Gillette are just a few options that are nearby and that the whole family can enjoy.
2 Visit Bloomfield’s New Accessibility Playground: Watsessing Park
This ADA-compliant playground is now open! “When we modernize our playgrounds, we have always included some elements that can be used by children with limited physical abilities — but all children should have a place to play, and having an all-access playground will bridge the gap between mainstream children and those with handicaps, create a better understanding, and foster social relationships” Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo said at the playground’s summer ribbon-cutting ceremony.
3 Stop by the Beach
Revisit New Jersey’s stunning sandy beaches one more time this fall — it’s free! After Labor Day, state beaches are free and open to the public, from Sandy Hook to Cape May. The boardwalks are still open, as is New Jersey’s 130 miles of preserved coastline — just note that lifeguards won’t be on duty in the off-season.
4 Experience the Asbury Park Zombie Walk
While you’re down the shore, stop by the Asbury Park Zombie Walk on October 5 from 4 to 8 PM (recommended for ages 10 and up). Dress up in a costume and head to the boardwalk for a zombie walk complete with food, music, and fireworks.
5 See a Broadway Play
Looking for a day to get out of town? Head to the city and see a Broadway musical — there are tons of autism-friendly performances this year, including The Lion King, Frozen, Wicked, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and Aladdin, all on Sunday afternoons. Visit TDF for more information, and enjoy the show!
